WHAT IS CBD?

Cannabidiol or (CBD) is a non-psychotropic cannabinoid compound with enormous therapeutic potential.

CBD is a chemical compound known as a cannabinoid, and the second most abundant source in the hemp plant (about 40%), from which it is extracted and separated. CBD is extracted from hemp, with a growing international body of science pointing to its nutritional and health benefits.

HOW DOES CBD WORK IN THE BODY

Research has identified a vast and complex system in the body called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). According to multiple studies, the ECS helps regulate many things including, brain function, mood, immune response, sleep, inflammation, stress, and pain.

This system is made up of endocannabinoids (naturally made chemicals in the body), cell receptors for cannabinoids, and enzymes that break cannabinoids down. ECS receptors are located throughout the entire body and are one of the main signaling channels for how the body responds to stimuli.

In addition to the cannabinoids produced by the body, cannabinoids from plants (like CBD) can also act on the endocannabinoid system. When a person consumes CBD, it interacts with the ECS receptors throughout the body. Specifically, CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

There are two types of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 (found primarily in the brain, and also the liver, kidneys and lungs) and CB2 (found mainly in the immune system). Together, the cannabinoid receptor sites help make up what is called the endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate things like memory, appetite, pain sensation, mood, sleep and more.

BENEFITS OF CBD

CBD has numerous advantages when consumed by a person. Aside its benefits, what makes CBD so acceptable in the medical world are the absence of effects produced by THC when it is destroyed. The effectiveness of Cannabidiol rests on its widely spread receptors and target locations in the body, allowing a higher area of functioning. Let’s see some benefits of using CBD.

  1. Protects against bone problems
Cannabinoids assist in the bone cycle of a human body – the process which allows old bone material to be replaced by new materials. When CBD is consumed, it hinders the activity of an enzyme responsible for destroying bone-building parts of the body. This action of CBD helps in reducing associated bone problems (aka bone diseases that are usually prevalent during old age. In cases where damage has been done to the bone, CBD facilitates the process of bone cell formation, speeding up the healing of broken bones and other bone problems.

  2. Provides protection and Healing benefits for the skin
CBD is safe and effective for all skin types, but especially helpful to people who struggle with inflammatory skin conditions, skin sensitivity, headaches, skin dryness, and acne. Because of its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can help support the skin’s natural healing process, shortening the lifespan of breakouts and eczema/psoriasis flare-ups.

  3. Helps with Stress and Anxiety
This falls among the common uses of CBD. The use of Cannabidiol in cases of stress and anxiety began centuries ago. CBD in higher concentrations is effective in reducing anxiety symptoms in patients.

  4. Provides Relief from Pain
Another common use of CBD is relieving pain. Following research, discovery has been made on the components present in cannabis that makes it an active pain-relieving substance. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the body is responsible for functions that involve regulating pain. Since CBD impacts the pain receptor activity in ECS, it can relieve an individual from even chronic pain.

  5. Reduces Cancer-related symptoms
The side effects of cancer medication and treatment like nausea, vomiting, and pain can be reduced or alleviated by CBD. Following research conducted on about 177 cancer patients, combining CBD and THC helps reduce pain when compared to other pain relief drugs. Another research explored the inhibition of breast cancer cells by CBD in mice.

The benefits of CBD in cancer cells are still undergoing research and evidence supporting the claim is negligible.

  6. Neuroprotective Properties
The ability of CBD to have effects on the EDC (endocannabinoid system) and other nervous systems has influenced researchers to believe that CBD can provide benefits for neurological disorders. For example, studies are ongoing for the effectiveness of CBD against epilepsy. Presently, there is only one scenario where using cannabidiol treatment for epilepsy has significant scientific evidence.
